Reykjavik is a small city, with a population of around 123,000 people. It’s located on the southwest coast of Iceland and can experience some pretty extreme snowy weather during the winter time. It is also Iceland’s capital city and is the place that you should visit when traveling in this area. To find out why, keep reading.

Large urban center

If you are planning a trip to Iceland, you should visit Reykjavik because it's the country's largest urban center. That means you are likely to be flying there anyway, and it's there you will find cultural places like Hallgrímskirkja and Harpa to visit, as well as a good selection of shops like Kruam and The Nordic Store, and some fun and non-traditional nightlife like B5 and Mengi to keep you entertained.

You do need to be aware that as a fairly remote place, the prices in Iceland for clothes and drink, in particular, can be quite high. Even in Reykjavik.

Full of delicious food places

The next reason that you should definitely visit Reykjavik when you are in Iceland is that it's full of places where you can sample delicious Icelandic cuisine.

This may include Skyr, a yogurt-like dish, at restaurants like Mataur Og Drykkur, or the famous crepes at Eldur and Is. You may even try Hákarl, or pickled shark if you are feeling particularly brave at Café Loki, although I have it on good authority that not many native Icelanders enjoy this particular delicacy. So don't feel too bad if it's not your thing!

Great base for other adventures

Another reason to make Reykjavik one of the top places in Iceland to visit is that it is a great location to use as a base for all of the other adventures that you want to complete -- adventures like exploring the ice caves, sea kayaking, or riding an ATV across the snowy terrain.

Don't be put off either by the hassle of organizing these types of trips as there are plenty of pre-arranged day tours in Iceland that depart from Reykjavik. It's easy as well as exciting to see all the amazing sites this beautiful country has to offer.

Near the Blue Lagoon

Lastly, another vital reason that Reykjavik is the best place to be when you are in Iceland is because of how close it is to one of the country's most visited places. That's right, the Blue Lagoon!

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa heated to the perfect bathing temperature, no matter how cold the weather is. It's actually the run off hot water from a local thermal power plant that is clean and directed towards this man made spa. The water is said to have ample relaxing and healing properties and many people visit to get relief from skin conditions such as Psoriasis. There are even massages available while you are in the water for a truly luxurious experience.

So, as you can see Reykjavik really is the best location in Iceland to visit. Not only does it have loads of local facilities and fun things to do, but it's also a well-recognized base for other adventures.
